I went to Chinatown today to the place on Grand and Chrystie. Shrimp, though frozen looked nice with jumbos from $6-7. Live Sea Bass at $4.60. Live Lobster from $7-9. I hear one should test the back of the lobster to be sure that it is not in the midst of moulting. (BAD!)
The live sea bass looked good. Wasn't sure of the lobsters, they looked a little listless.
I wasn't sure of the scallops either, some looked bleached.
I've had great luck at Wild Edibles with the scallops and shrimp there, and likewise Citarellas, but the prices are really astronomical compared to Chinatown.
When I go to WE and C, are their shrimp and scallops frozen and then thawed?
Is the place further east with more live fish better?
Do I lose much in buying frozen?
Is there a book on this?
