I won't ask for "best," but I will settle for "good." I love fish and chips, and I have yet to find a genuinely good place to get them. I would love it if I could find a place in Oakland or Berkeley, but SF near BART (or in Downtown or the Mission) would also be lovely.
I've had OK fish and chips at Taylor's Refresher in the Ferry Building mkt place. Bland and pricey, but fresh and skilfully cooked.
I've had lousy (rubbery/greasy/etc) fish and chips at
Beckett's in Berkeley
Bentleys(?) on College in Oakland
Ben + Nicks in Oakland (actually I don't know if these are any good...but they use SALMON! Hello? I'm sorry? Salmon?)
My partner and I were in Del Mar in September, and we went to the Fish Market, which had good, solid, yummy, fresh fish and chips. We are actually considering doing a bike/train trip to the Palo Alto branch to get some. But this will not happen anytime soon.
Can it be that there are no decent fish and chip joints in the (central) bay area? I find that hard to believe. Please, prove me wrong...
Hole in the wall preferred, but at this point, we'll take anything.
