Finally- a decent Latte in Echo Park

Chapina | Jun 4, 200511:32 PM

I am thrilled to see the little hole in the wall, El Authentico getting a funky make-over. This place has been the typical Mexican hole were the table are sticky, the decor, lets just say lacking, and the food mediocre but cheap. The new owner has been spending lots of time on a constrained budget to spruce it up a bit, with inspiring results. I won't get carried away here, its still a hole in the wall with tackily over-done decor; but its clean, the foods decent, they put in a make-shift patio in the front, and just put in a double-group espresso machine.
I know what you may be thinking...hole in the wall Mexican, make a decent latte...impossible. But after much protest my boyfriend reluctantly agreed to at least give them a chance. I was stunned when we were handed two cups of espresso with beautifully steamed milk, foamed and blended to the perfect consistency. At first the single shot in the 12 oz cup was not strong enough, but when I asked the kid to give me another shot in each, it was perfect. Finally, no need for the hipness-factor to just get a good morning start.
El Authentico, at corner of Sunset and Douglas, up the road from the Dodger's Stadium and open at 6:30 am.
