My search for authentic Fujian style fishballs has finally produced a satisfactory result. China Villa in Union City (same shopping center as China Tofu and Little Potato)has them. How they differ from *normal* fishballs.... these are large (matzo ball size) with a meat filling inside. China Billa's version had the necessary light, almost fluffy fish exterior and a savory, lean meat interior. The soup that it comes with was subtle and bright punctuated by bits of scallion.
I also had their preserved cabbage and pork fired rice. Generally, I've the this topping with noodles or rice cakes. I've never had it with rice before. Their version had bits of egg in it too. Clean, subtle flavour. Very Fujian style.
They have a Chinese menu (in simplified Chinese so I had a tough time reading it and had to make some educated guesses as I only read traditional characters) that has small plates/snacks that a re typical in Northern or Taiwanese cooking. They have a XLB but the waitress I spoke with said it was only so-so. There's an extensive home style dishes for 3 for $15.00 that looked yummy. They do try to stick you with the English menu of sweet and sour whatever type dishes though so ask for the Chinese menu even if you don't read. They will help you. Would love to try out other dishes o nthe menu. The owners, cook, and wait staff are from Mainland China
I took a picture of the fish ball soup, but don't know how to load the pic, so sorry. But if you think matzo ball soup, you'll get the idea.
