Festival of Greece in Oakland - May 16-18

Well, all this talk of Greek food...

The Festival of Greece is again taking place at the Greek Orthodox Church (next to the Mormon Temple) in Oakland May 16, 17, and 18.

I went about six years ago and found the food delicious and the lines daunting. That was before I was a chowhound, though, so don't trust me on the food!

Here's some text from the site about the food to be offered:

"This year’s Festival will again feature such popular items as: gyro (sliced ground beef, tsaziki – a cucumber/yogurt sauce and pita bread) gigantes (an outstanding large white bean from Greece, exquisitely prepared); grilled lamb chops with Kouloura bread; loukaniko (sausage), calamari (squid), Nescafe frappe (Greece’s traditional and popular ice-cold, delicately sweetened, coffee drink) and more.

Always a main attraction, a buffet of traditional Greek entrees will be offered a la carte and presented in the dining hall. Favorites such as souvlaki (shishkebab), vegetable tourlou (baked medley of vegetables), baked chicken (with lemon and oregano), delicious loukoumades (honey-laced warm pastry) and a host of other unique food items.

An assortment of Greek wines include: white wines – Kourtakis Retsina, Gaia Notios (Moschofilero/Rhoditis Blend) and Château Harlaftis – chardonnay, and red wines – Harlaftis Athanasiadis Nemes – Agiorgitiko and Chateau Harlaftis - Cabernet Sauvignon."
