Ethopian on Eastern

baltoellen | Feb 13, 2005 12:18 PM

I've been keeping my eyes open ever since a post a few weeks ago altered Balto hounds to a new Ethopian restaurant on Eastern Ave. Anyway, I was going to grab my first taco at The Tortilleria (love their tortillas, and couldn't wait to try the tacos). As luck would have it, we grabbed a parking spot right across the street, which happened to be right in front of the quasi-unnamed Ethopian restaurant. (Although they think they are going to keep the old name, Sunlight.)

So, we bagged our taco plans for the moment, and checked out the new place. And, I am delighted to report, that Sunlight (or whatever) is a welcome addition to the block, the neighborhood, and the city. As someone who agreed with other posters about being incredibly disappointed with the Dukem on MD Ave., I was yearning for some decent Ethopian, and this place has it. We order a vegetarian combo thing, with at least three kinds of lentil dishes (one yellow, one green, and one red: very pretty...) and collards. All were very good, not incredibly hot, but all nice and sublte spices. The injera (or however the "bread" is spelled), was incredibly spongy and flavorful. We also ordered a simple, but terrific salad, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, jalepinos, which was lightly dressed and perfect. We also tried something called a sambusa (I think), a packet of ground beef in a fried filo-like wrapper. It was very nice, and the owner also brough over one filled with lentils (which was much better) for us to try.

In any event, we'll be back, and hope others will as well. It seems as though that block on Eastern may become a hot little place, with that new Timothy Dean Bistro right next door, and The Tortillaria right across the street...and speaking of Tortilleria, in true 'hound fashion, and stuffed as we were, we went there and split a beef taco....also great!
