El Sobrante Restaurant Recap

rworange | Jul 14, 2005 04:44 AM

Just a little recap of restaurants and food store in El Sobrante that I’ve tried since moving to the area in December. There are a few I missed. I don’t know that much about Chinese food, so my comments on the board are worth less than nothing in that area.

Also, I really am not fond of Indian food for the most part, so I skipped one of the Indian restaurants.

A few comments about markets and restaurants not mentioned in their own posts.

HI COUNTRY PRODUCE
I like Hi Country Produce on Apian Way. It is a tiny produce market that has a good selection and quality and is easy to get in and out of when I need something. They also seem to have a selection of Thai foods which is strange since the owners are Indian.

CENTRAL MARKET
Central Market just reopened on July 9th with new owners. It has a meat counter and fresh produce. It seems their strength may be they carry some Caribbean, Central and South American products. They have Puerto Rican Pasteles. They only sell them by the dozen though for about $26. They have some Central and South American frozen items that I haven’t seen before.

They had frozen arepas, the type that look like thick tortillas. This link has arepas that look like what Central Market sells and a history of arepas.

CHEF CHU’s
Not bad for steam table food. The $1.99 lunch special is a good deal. Skip the potstickers

SAM”S DOG HOUSE
Skinless Miller’s hot dogs, chips, shakes, chili, fries. Average dog house.

The following have more info in the links at the end

BIANCOS DELI
Good sandwiches, roast turkey, some baked goods, free trade coffee.

CAFE SOLEIL
Good breakfast spot. Very child friendly

THE CELLAR
The best selection of wine and beer in the area. Same owner as Solano Cellars

EL CHALAN
Peruvian / Italian restaurant. Outstanding cevivche and tiramisu. Excellent Sunday sandwich – pan con chicharron (pork and sweet potatoes)

GOU BU LI
Excellent Chinese food. The restaurant is named for the special buns they make on Monday nights. On the weekends they have Dim Sum aka Xiao Chi

JOE’S OF EL SOBRANTE
Old style Italian-American food and pizza

JONES BBQ
Rice with gravy and smoked chicken are outstanding. The best BBQ items are the chicken and links. All the desserts are good.

KALIENTE
Some of the best pupusas in the entire Bay Area

NEW RATNA MAHAL
Very nice Indian market next door to Raley’s

PJ’S RISTORANTE
Good Cioppino, soups and Italian-American food

TACO TRUCKS - LA FORTUNA & TACOS RODRIGUEZ
At La Fortuna the $1.25 taco comes with 2 salsas, chips, fresh radishes and green onions. Good horchata. The chicken tamales are recommended,
Rodgriguez carnitas tacos are recommended

TANDOORI CHICKEN USA
Fantastic chicken sandwich, but eat it at the restaurant while it is hot from the tandoori

TINA’S CREEKSIDE CAFÉ
Very good breakfast

Most of these are based on one or two visits. I hope local chowhounds will comment about their favorite dishes or restaurants. If you are shy, e-mail me and I’ll post your recommendations.
