El Fish Fritanga - Cancun

A chow shout to GabachaYucateca for suggesting this place in earlier posts.

My DC and I tried this place last night while on a two week visit to Cancun. We are staying in a condo nearby. Without the suggestion, we never would have found it. It is modest with little signage. It fronts on the lagoon with most of the tables on the (packed) sand. At sunset, the view was terrific and the ambience great. A marina is next door.

We initially though it was only the take-out stand in front by the street. You need to go around to the back and down the stairs to get to the real restaurant. The staff were gracious and very frindly. Not much English spoken here. There is a fairly active bar with big TVs tuned to soccer games but we were seated on the beach and it was not a distraction.

On to the food: it was terrific. We both had (different) varieties of ceviche and we both pronounced it superb. Large servings; we are having leftovers for lunch. Ceviche was 110 pesos.

We both ordered mains off their "specialties" menu section. Almost all specialties were 160 pesos. My DC had a fish filet stuffed with shell fish etc. that came highly recommended by our waiter. She found it a bit bland but it turned out fine once she added some salsa etc. (I've since learned that sort of preparation is typical of Yucatan cooking.) I had shrinp in an orange sauce which I really liked. Nice flavor that blended with the shrimp well.

The menu is almost entirely fish. There is one steak entree and one chicken entree just in case someone who won't eat fish gets taken there. Dining was not cheap but reasonable by hotel zone standards. We each had a drink and a beer plus we had an order of guacomole. Total before tip came to about 740 pesos. Worth it.

El Fish Fritanga is located in the hotel zone on the boulevard at about km 12.5. It is in a strip mall with Dominos at the other end. Across from the police station. They have a web site: . Tel: 998-840-6216. They have very limited hours; it appears they open at 2PM and close at 8PM. Try to go so you can catch the sunset.
