Duck confit?

I just bought two duck legs for Pesach. I've never worked with duck before and I really want to get it right! Does anyone have a foolproof beginners method for duck confit (I don't have access to the extra duck fat that some recipes call for.) Also, I'm picturing being able to shred the meat and use it on a salad - will that work?
