Normally I wouldn't denigrate a place after just one meal, but the reason for this post is more to support the other African restaurants in DC than to put anybody down. I'm sure that Wazuri has its moments judging from some of the satisfied posts on this board. But the food (and the clientele) here is pale in comparison to Bukom, Ghana, Akosombo, and even Zanzibar (upscale, fantasy African). I'm not under any illusion that some of the above places don't have some bad food, but the good stuff soars way above Wazuri. And it's plenty cheaper too.
The black sea bass was put through the deflavorizing machine, and the tomato sauce that came with the braised vegetables was too simple for a main dish. Altogether, the kind of place that Chowhounds would run away from (and fast) if it were Vietnamese or Thai or Mexican or Jamaican or a dozen others. But I guess African gets some slack because it's the last outpost.
Doesn't anyone remember Le Tam Tam? French West African a couple of blocks north of there that could rival elegant French resturants. I guess I could have dealt with that sort of 'take' rather than the safety of Wazuri.
