Dinner with the parents -- Old Ebbitt

A couple weeks ago I appealed to you all for advice on where to go for a "meet the parents" dinner. You wisely guided me to Old Ebbitt. Not stellar food or service, but a smart, classy, comfortable place for small town guests.

We started with calamari (bf's fave) and crab dip (his mom's choice). Both were standard and tasty. The calamari was quite fresh, though the treatment left something to be desired -- a tasteless, not quite crunchy batter. I was in charge of wine for the first course. I chose Hess Select Chardonnay -- safe, inexpensive and the parents LOVED it. I like the stuff in a "drink it any night of the week" way. Everyone loved it so much we stuck with it for the rest of the night -- 3 bottles in all.

For the mains, his dad got chicken fettucine alfredo and raved (we weren't close enough for me to take a bite off his plate.) His mom and I both got lemon pepper salmon and he got tuna that was sesame crusted. All were fine, not amazing. I had ordered mine simply for the mashed potatoes anyway. They were out of the trout which I think I would have preferred. Very nice portions...I could only eat about half of mine.

As a result, no one had dessert, just a round of coffee.

In all, very accessible menu at prices that wouldn't make anyone feel uncomfortable. Nice without being stuffy. While I wouldn't go here on a date or for a special occasion, there's a time and a place for it and this was it.

Highlight of the evening -- I totally hit it off with the parents. That was the important part anyway :)
