We are able to get to New Orleans only a couple of times a year and have always eaten at the Sunday Jazz Brunch at Commander's Palace. We have always enjoyed it. This visit we decided to try dinner and it was very good, not great. Service was almost non-existent for the first 15-20 minutes after we were seated -- took a long time to place our wine order and then another long wait to actually get the wine. After finally ordering, starters came timely, but then the main courses were served as the appetizer plates were being removed. Although we were there late, it seemed like we were being rushed to turn the table. Maybe they were just all ready to go home.
Food was better than the service. Starters included Shrimp & Tasso Henican, Shrimp Remoulade and Fois Gras "2" Ways. All were good, especially the shrimp and tasso dish. It comes served on a hot pepper jelly that is dynamite. Mains were the Pecan Crusted Fish (black drum on this night), Crawfish Maque Choux, Black Angus Sirloin Steak and Veal Chop Tchoupitoulas. The crawfish dish was just OK -- not very tasty, actually. The fish was excellent, as were the steak and the veal chop.
Desserts were also fine. Two of us had the strawberry shortcake, which was fabulous. The creme brulee and the cheesecake were also excellent.
Our dinner was good, but we will probably make the Sunday brunch our CP meal next time.
