dining between Venice and Tampa

This question is related to food, but also somewhat off-topic, so I hope you don't mind. My hubby and I live in Coconut Grove (Miami) but are thinking of moving to the Gulf coast--probably somewhere between Venice and Tampa. I'm asking you for advice, on which area(s) to start looking for a home. We'd like an area that is relatively near good dining and cafes, would be good to raise a family, and is within 20-25 min. drive (non-rush hour) of the beach. Preferably someplace with character, not strip-mall suburbia land.

We're in our early 30's and love walking to our nearby shops and restaurants--but the tradeoff is a tiny city lot, no garage, worry about crime, etc. We want a bigger house with a lot big enough to plant a garden, and a neighborhood where kids can ride their bikes and play.

Apologies again for going off-topic, but any advice would be appreciated!
