Detour to La Casita Chilanga 2, Redwood City

The evening commute was brutal. Facing a wall of bumper-to-bumper traffic when I merged onto 101, my mood brightened when I realized that I was in easy striking distance of La Casita Chilanga on El Camino in Redwood City, a spot I hadn't visited for a while.


New since my last visit was a frame on the wall displaying the cover of The Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area, the guide's section on La Casita Chilanga, and the article in Newsweek quoting that its tortas are the best outside DF. Trying my favorite, Milanesa, I am pleased to report that no one needs to retract that recommendation. The small telera is still light and nicely grilled. The beef cutlet was cooked to order, not precooked and reheated, which meant that the greaseless breading was light and crisp especially around the edges and the meat was juicy and fresh-tasting Spicy marinated carrots and jalapeños, avocado slices, fresh milky cheese, and a dab of garlic mayonnaise added to the picture make the sum greater than the parts. Perfect for dinner eaten in the car.
