a dessert version of takoyaki?

I ate something like takoyaki in San Francisco's Chinatown; little puffed,crispy balls, made in what looked like a takoyaki pan, but sweet, with a creamy, custardy inside (not a filling, but the dough itself was creamy), almost like a cannele. Does anyone know what these are called? Thanks.
