When my plans in Petaluma fell through, I headed over to Della Fattoria Cafe for a solo lunch. A few months ago, it expanded meal service into the adjacent event space and re-organized the retail bakery to include a grab-and-go selection as well as a few seats. It's has resumed dinner service again, Thursday through Saturday, with plans to add more nights in the future. Dinner reservations can be made on Openable.
At 1:30pm on a Tuesday (admittedly the day before the 4th of July holiday), I was surprised to find a line-up of customers waiting for tables in a full house. After about ten minutes, I was seated at the communal table at the front of the cafe's dining room.
A daily special of Fried fish and fingerling potatoes, $16, sounded good on the menu. This turned out to be a fish-n-chips take made with rock cod and waxy potatoes. The batter was very crunchy and pretty thick leaving a oil smear on the plate. Yet, the local rockfish was juicy, perfectly cooked and impeccably fresh. Knocking some of the batter off worked for me, and a drag through the rich tartar sauce. The flattened and deep-fried potatoes appealed to me even more.
House-brewed, unsweetened ice tea was refilled for me a couple times on this warm afternoon. A shortage of lemons meant there was no lemonade available that day nor Arnold Palmers.
Bread and butter is by request only. Do remember to ask for some with an entree order.
Previously I'd visited this event space for Raft Wines release party a year ago. Refitted as a dining room, the energy and casual sophistication complement Della Fattoria's cuisine.
After my meal, I stopped by the bakery side to pick up some bread. Near closing time, this is all that was left for sale. Next time I'll make my purchase before lunch.
