Every once in a while we get lucky and hit a dining spot where it all comes together...food, service, atmosphere and value. Such was our experience last night.
We started out with wood grilled octopus with crispy rice cake in an incredibly flavorful hot and sour broth. This was my favorite dish. Smoky octopus, very tender and beautifully presented. Our other starter was the salt and pepper shrimp and scallops. Best rendition of this dish that I have had. My only regret is the portion size was on the small side.
Steam buns were next up. We tried the tempura catfish with pineapple tarter sauce, and the schreiner sausage with daikon slaw and spicy Japanese mustard. Both were very unique and excellent.
For our main course we had a rice dish and noodle dish. The rice dish was a braised brisket (melt in your mouth tender) with vegetables in a chili sauce. The noodle dish was a massam udon noodle dish with duck in an incredibly rich red curry sauce.
The dinner was capped off with a soft serve miso ice cream with a homemade strawberry glaze. We were very full and very satisfied.
We had a cocktail and a beer and our bill was around $70.
The meal we had was very reminiscent of our experience at Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York (David Chang). I enjoyed Clever Koi just as much.
