Which way to churn, a question about ice cream makers

I have a little, non electric, Salton Ice Cream maker that makes pretty good ice cream. I recently received a Kitchen Aid stand mixer as a gift and some $ to spend to get attachments for it. I am interested in getting the ice cream maker. I assume it works better than my hand crank machine because it cranks for you, but does the cranking add anything to the ice cream other than making it cold? And how does this method vary from those electric White Mountain ice cream makers? The ice cream book that I have really doesn't explain the differences. Is it all about the churning? Thanks
