On Monday night my boyfriend and I took his daughter and her Italian husband, brother-in-law and little two-year-old son, plus his 18-year-old college-age son from another marriage on a tour of the Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights Christmas extravaganza lights. Che meraviglio...! etc. Much hilarity. After which I somewhat trepidatiously (after all, the daughter and family live in Milan) took them to Gino's on Fifth Ave and 75th St. in Bay Ridge, based solely on chowhound reports, because I hadn't been there before either. Huge success. What a pleasant placewith a real family Italian restaurant feel, not pretentious but not tasteless either. They set a comfortable corner table with banquettes, produced a high chair, and whipped out sparklingly fresh fried calamari and zucchini which we ate while choosing a pizza. Not quite di Fara level but nonetheless very good (we had fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil with anchovies on half of it). The Italians loved it, we got a parking spot literally outside... and everyone went home well fed and cheerful. Highly recommended for spontaneous family eating.
