Chocolate truffles—to mold or not to mold?

My niece and I make great chocolate truffles that we give as holiday gifts. We have always molded them by hand and rolled in cocoa so they look a bit like actual truffles. This year, we thought we’d up our game and use molds so each truffle would have a hard chocolate shell. Is this a waste of time and chocolate? Will it extend the fridge life of the truffles to any significant degree? Would you rather get coated, more professional looking truffles as a gift, or would you be happier with old-school dusted ones? And if there are seasoned truffle-makers out there, could you please recommend a good brand of molds? Are flexible silicone ones better, or the hard polycarbonate kind? Any other supplies or tips that would help in molding?
