Chocolat Noir au Poivre Rose-The Pasta Shop, Berkeley

Honestly, is there a chocolate bar worthy of a hour's drive through heavy San Francisco traffic and across the Bay Bridge? I wouldn't have said so until last Sunday.

It has been almost a decade since I last had Dolfin's chocolate with pink peppercorns, though I have found several other (infinitely less interesting) Dolfin chocolates at Draeger's. I thought I'd have to wait until a trip to Europe to taste it again.* The Pasta Shop had only this one, but it was the right one!

If you've never had this chocolate, run, don't walk. The chocolate itself is suave and powerful, with the crunch and heady fragance of the pink peppercorns nicely balanced by the smooth richness of dark chocolate.

*I confess that this post is motivated by self-interest: the desire to get enough people to taste and consequently demand the more widespread distribution of one of my all-time favorite chocolates.
