On their basement level, Kam Man Supermarket on Canal Street has now expanded their bowls, cutlery, cooking accesseries, etc to fill the entire floor. Formerly, they had a great collection of canned and bottled Asian foods and sauces, which have supposedly been moved to the main floor. (Although, some of the sauces were always on the main floor.)
But, the entire food selection, now all together in the main floor aisles, seems much smaller. About a third of what it was; i.e., two basic items I can always get there--small tins of preserved cabbage (not mustard greens which were available) and Oriental Mascot's Fermented Black Beans in Chili Paste were not anywhere in sight. They used to have many of each. I'm hoping that perhaps they cut down their orders, while rennovating and changing--and that a new shipment will be arriving soon. Even the selection of fresh rice noodles and leaf-wrapped sticky rice snacks were minimal. In fact--the whole store felt more westernized, heaven forbid. I hope I'm wrong, 'cause I can't see why a Chinese supermarket would decide to offer their community less, with all the competition they must face. I've shoped at Kam Man for years now because of its great variety.
Anyone know what's up, if anything?
