Chicago-Style Pizza

I grew up on the Southside of Chicago in the 1950s. Pizzerias were family-owned establishments at that time. There were no chain pizzerias that I know of at that time. Pizzas were thin-crust with simple toppings in the 1950s. When did that fat-crust crap become Chicago-Style Pizza? BTW, I live on the East Coast now.
