Chicago Hound Reports: Queens Pizza Slice Crawl

Well...thought I'd share this Queens pizza-slice tasting report with you...

I was staying in Queens having attended the Red Hot Chili Peppers (awesome) concert at Jones Beach over the weekend. I'd planned to go into Manhattan and do a pizza slice crawl on Monday but ran out of time...

SO... I was in two Queens neighborhoods: 1) Forest Hills AND 2) this off-the-beaten-track neighborhood at Woodhaven Blvd. and Jamaica (Woodhaven or Richmond Hill area)...and said what the heck, I'll just crawl these local slice places...

Well, here's the report...also, all these comments are based on the "Regular Slice"...plain sauce & cheese, thin style.

1) Woodhaven/ Richmond hill...this is a multi-ethnic neighborhood with large PR, Trinidad, Guyanese populations and they DO take their Pizza pretty serious. For alot of area residents, it's more like "dinner" than a snack.

A) Sammy & Larry's 84-13 Jamaica...Sweet, mild taste, largely from the cheese...chewy, folds real nice w/o cracking... I'd return.

B) Sal's 85-07 Jamaica...Found it very thin, crispy, tasteless...nothing attractive, wouldn't return.

C) Ben's 89-00 Jamaica...Soft, somewhat thicker, some flavor...might return if it was only place open.

D) D'Aleo's 90-10 Jamaica Ave...Flavorful, nice medium thickness, very little grease run-off....Still thinking of the slice...more professional looking place and they had the Grateful Dead playing....would return often.

E) Carlo's or Carlos'...90 something Jamaica...near Woodhaven & Jamaica...pizza tastes about as good as the place looks...the least interesting on the block, wouldn't return.

2) Forest Hills... WELL, I do pity those in search of a slice in FH...tried 3 places and wouldn't want to re-visit any of them: Arianas, A&J, Sorrisi...

Of course FH has very good pie restaurants in Nicks & Emmas.

SO, out of 8 slice joints visited on the Crawl, D'Aleo's is the CLEAR FAVORITE.... Sammy & Larry is well worth a try, also. I wouldn't go back anywhere else.
