Chianti Riserva Bargain @ TJ's

Sam B | Jan 7, 200512:48 AM

Imports at TJ's can be hit or miss, but I bought a bottle of 1999 Marchese de Petri Il Valore Chianti Riserva on a whim a couple of months ago, and have been buying it regularly ever since. At $4.99, it is to my mind an amazing deal given the exchange rate.

It's not a wine for the ages, and it's not Chianti Classico. Tastes more like something from Rufina, or the other sub-zones - high acid, a pleasant leaness, and really classic cherries and almonds in the mouth. Drinkers looking for something with a CA profile will be disappointed - there's no apparent oak, no RS, and no muscat. Label claims 12.5% Alc, but I would guess it's lower. It's a bit old school, and I like that. It's my pasta wine of choice these days

Have also been buying the Marques de Caceres White Rioja - mostly Viura I think. It clean, and fruity, if a bit simple. It's best when young and lively. The '03 they are currently selling has lost some of its freshness, but is still a perfectly sound bottle. At $3.99 it is below CA wholesale, and far better than 2 buck chuck.
