cherry deformities

Now that cherries are gloriously in season, I bought a bunch yesterday and proceeded to eat my way through them. I quickly encountered the two-assed (can I say that?) cherry, the one with the "vestigial parasitic twin" as someone on the Bay area board put it. But you know, the cherry that has a little cherry growing off of it. I never saw these until I moved to the States (from Canada). What's the deal? I assume they're safe to eat, and it almost looks like that's the way they grow, some sort of weird mitosis...
Any thoughts, facts, info?
