In the current #50 Chow Alert, Jim writes about some of his favorite ways to make healthy-but-not-so-tasty cereals palatable and still healthy.
(and no, I'm not going to share his tricks here, if you want them, subscribe to Chow Alerts already! You're really missing great recommendations, ideas, and writing if you haven't ponied up for a subscription)
First, as far as Kashi goes, the new version of Good Friends with cinnamon and raisins is definitely an improvement over the original plain version. Still, barely edible on its own, and I can't imagine having it unadorned with just milk.
My favorite way to eat it is with a really great plain yogurt. Erivan is my favorite, but if you can't find it (Mrs. Greens in Westchester and Fairway uptown carries it), Stonyfield Farms organic of any sort is also terrific. Then, top with frozen berries.
Frozen berry tip: Trader Joe's "Fancy Mixed Berries" is particularly terrific because what makes it fancy is that it contains no strawberries. Strawberries stay way too frozen for way too long, and if you wait for them to thaw a little, the blueberries, raspberries and blackberries in the mix are soggy.
