Central Valley Pies

Torina | Sep 3, 201401:17 PM     9

One of my favorite aspects of heading up into Gold Country or, further, into the Sierra is stopping at the fruit stands and farm markets to buy pie. Please add your recommendations!

Here are two spots with really good pie that I've found:

Biglieri Farms (17815 California 88, Clements, CA 95227) -- $13 for a fruit pie. When I've bought them, they've been warm. I have tried Boysenberry twice and Cherry as well. Cherry can be a mix of various cherries including Bings and Raniers, basically whatever grew on the farm, but the one I got was sour cherries, which is what I look for. The crust is flaky and tasty. Seems to have a little hit of lard, but I didn't ask them.

They also sell ravioli, jams, and fresh produce, but I've only tried the pies.

Clements is close to Lodi.

Happy Apple Kitchen (18532 Colfax Hwy, Grass Valley, CA 95945) -- They sell both small (5") pies and full size pies; I don't recall the price now. I tried boysenberry and dutch apple, and had no regrets. They also make great fruit shakes.
