Last night one of my favorite things that sometimes (with some luck) happen in new places happened: we found a total gem by accident. After Key West's Sunset Celebration we wanted to eat at either Seven Fishes, Louie's Backyard, Alice's or 915- all of which had come highly recommended. Unfortunately, there were two hour waits at all of them and so we decided to stop in Marathon on the way back to Islamorada. There's nothing I hate more than walking into a random restaurant to eat, knowing full well that some research could have turned up a completely iconic spot around the damn corner. Anyway, I started searching Marathon restaurants on Chowhound and most were not even open on Sundays. I reached out to an old pal who told me about a place off the main road called Castaways where the owner spears his own lionfish (!!!) and they have a sushi chef who turns out some of the best sushi EVER. We parked in a lot over run with cats and people who were stumbling around a bit drunk and raucous. I wasn't so sure. Man, was I surprised! One of my best Floridian meals ever! The sushi was off the charts, the stonecrab rolls were BEYOND, the yellow tail hamachi outrageous, the barrel fish new to me and fantastic, and My chowpups's lionfish definitely "malicious but delicious!" I almost cried when I saw the owners ( Philipino women...I was starting to really miss my Asian peeps in Flushing, Queens...no sight of them anywhere...withdrawal was beginning ) and immediately realized why there was "lumpia" on the menu. If you ever find yourself in Marathon and are pining for fresh fish and sushi, this is THE place!
