Canopy, downdraft, or telescoping cooktop ventilation?

Still immersed in kitchen renovation planning. My cooktop (electric, unfortunately...too expensive to move gas into kitchen) will be on a peninsula that will divide the kitchen and dining room.

I'm trying to decide which type of ventilation to go with. I'm worried that a downdraft may not capture odors and smoke. Can't find a telescoping draft model in any showroom to see how that works.

What is your experience?
