There's just something about Balthazar - good food, drinks, fun atmosphere, that keeps me coming back year after year to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or to bring first time visitors to NYC.
My husband and I recently enjoyed our 30th anniversary dinner there. We were early and started with cocktails at the bar. I walked by a guy sipping a three-toned drink and asked him what it was. He said it was the best Mojito he'd ever had. That being one of my favorites, I ordered it too, and concur. As Mary Poppins might say, it was practically perfect in every way.
Our extremely cordial and welcoming server brought us to what I call a "canoodling" table. A round table where we could sit next to each other and canoodle. Which in our case meant eat, drink and laugh. She also brought us a couple flutes of champagne on the house for our anniversary. ;-) Excellent service.
For dinner we enjoyed the Balthazar Salad, French Onion Soup, Grilled Lamb T Bones, and the Saturday special - Short Ribs. We had been toying with ordering the Cote du Boeuf for two which is my very favorite steak in the city, but hubby had eaten steak the night before and wanted lamb. No problemo. All the food was excellent. Well prepared. There was a little too much bread in the onion soup for me, but the favor was great. Right now, Artisanal makes my favorite one. Whatever you order at Balthazar, get the frites!
Even though dinner was more than enough, and we were taking home leftovers, it was our special day so we got dessert. Profiteroles - three ice cream filled cream puffs covered with rich delicious chocolate, and my husband's favorite - Lemon Mille Feuille - a hand-formed lemon Napoleon, lemon granite and what they call lemon parfait. If you like lemon, get this one.
