I went here today and had their steak and cheese special....it was really not good, which is too bad because this place used to be great. After I finished my meal and spoke to a coworker about how unpleasant my sandwich was she informed me that management had changed. When I thought about it, I realized the gentleman who usually worked the register (in a chefs coat, clearly the owner) was not there, and the kitchen staff looked different as well.
What was bad about my sandwich? Well lets start with the onions, enourmous diced red onions, I am talking about 1 inch in diameter, were like big wet slugs of onion flavor....not good. Not alot of meat to vegetable ratio, also not good, and somehow the meat imparted a ton of liquid and grease...it soaked right through the bread turning it into a paste, just yuck.
I hope this was just an off day, but judging by the execution of the onions alone (such a large dice suggests lazy prep work to me) I would hesitate to try it again, which is too bad, as their italian sub was one of my favorites in the city. Will just have to walk a little farther to J.Pace's for my italian sub fix I guess.
