I have a Bulgarian boyfriend, and I try to make things from his home country for him, and he often loves it. The problem is that there is not much out there in the way of Bulgarian recipes. When I do find something he's mentioned, I look into it endlessly trying to figure out how to make it (and there are so many variations per recipe, IF it can even be found), then make the one that sounds most like what he mentions it to be.
I've had some great successes so far, with the biggest one being Tikvenik/Banitsa - he said the way I make it is much more authentic than his mother does!
In the spirit of increasing my repertoire of Bulgarian cuisine, please post any dishes you may make and any tips you can give :)
If it's something with lamb, all the better! Seems the Bulgarians are crazy for lamb, but it's not the meat I feel most confident with.
Before someone mentions it, I have not been able to find Bulgarian cuisine cookbooks in local (physical and online) stores, Amazon doesn't deliver to South Africa, and other international book sites I frequent don't have any, so I have to resort to the Internet for all my Bulgarian cuisine needs.
