I tried this new place tonight and it was pretty good. They opened about 10 weeks ago on 70th & 15th in Ballard. It's a cute place with a cool antique bar and artwork, but they don't go OTT to be kitschy old or rustic. The open kitchen is all shiny stainless and subway tile.

We started with a dish of lentils, celeriac slaw, and pork belly that I really liked as well as their flatbread with white bean puree, roasted eggplant, and pickled peppers. The white bean dip was nicely garlicky, but the roasted eggplant quarter still on its skin was awkward to eat, it wasn't quite soft enough to scrape off the skin. I enjoyed the seared duck breast with orange and escarole. My Mom enjoyed the burger but thought the fries could have been hotter. The ones I stole seemed hot, crispy, and salty enough. Dad's bowl of jambalaya was huge. I didn't try it, but the server admitted it would not be very spicy.

We shared the frozen s'more pie for dessert. It was a thick layer of graham cracker crust topped with vanilla bean & lemon zest semifreddo (or at least that's my interpretation) and a thick chocolate sauce. I appreciated the depth of the chocolate sauce but was a little distracted by the unexpected lemon flavor. Still a good effort.

If I lived in the neighborhood I would go back.

cheers,
B
