Broccoli casserole came out watery -- how to 'de-water-fy'?

I used this broccoli & leek casserole recipe from foodandwine.com

But it came out quite watery at the bottom, and I had to drain off a lot of liquid.

There was a lot of fresh veggie in there -- 3lbs of fresh broccoli and 2 sliced leeks. I'm wondering if I didn't dry the broccoli well enough after I steamed it? I put it on a paper-towel lined cookie sheet like the recipe said. Or perhaps I steamed it too much? Is it possible that over-steaming would make the final dish wetter?

Not sure what to do and X-mas is next week!
