A year ago my brother and I enjoyed a Monday morning breakfast at Sambo's before heading out of town.
The original location by the beach is the original and only remaining location of this once large chain.
Seeing the old-fashioned counter was a wave of nostalgia for the diner that we knew as kids. But on this sunny spring day, we wanted a table outside.
Only a short wait for a beachfront seat, just long enough to take a look at some of the Sambo&amp;amp;#39;s memorabilia.
The warm chocolate chip mini-muffins served with whipped butter are as good as everyone says. They hit the table immediately to have something to snack on while we studied the menu.
No need to order coffee here, as it provides neither flavor nor much of a caffeine pick-me-up.
My short stack of pancakes was just fine. Fluffy and light.
Better yet was the tri-tip and egg breakfast that William ordered with a fruit cup instead of potatoes. The thick slices of roast tri-tip were seared on the grill to warm them up. Juicy and tender, we never expected to find such good tri-tip here.
What really made the tri-tip sing were the two homemade salsas. Not offered automatically, our server brought them out when we asked if there was something besides bottled hot sauce. Both were deeply flavored and spicy, and better than the famed La Superica&amp;amp;#39;s, where the salsas are a weak point.
Our food was good, and the service and setting even better. It was fun to take a step back in time to revisit childhood memories.
