Little Boy in the Orange Fez: A Tale of Great Coffee and Death By Chocolate

I was hoping to find out about some of your favorite coffee shops and hopefully discover some hidden gems. My current favorite is Julius Meinl Cafe, located at 3601 N. Southport, which is at Addison. It's a Viennese firm that first opened its doors in 1862 (some two hundred years after the Turkish army of Pasha Kara Mustafa brought coffee there), and so the coffees and teas they serve are just fantastic. I can't vouch for any of the drinks that require barrista know-how, but if that's what mows your lawn everything else about this place suggests that they would be just fine. They offer salads, sandwiches and their own pastries, including a tasty hot molten-center chocolate cake with chocolate sauce. If there was ever death by chocolate, I think this is it. Yet the desserts, even the aforementioned cake, are not overbearingly sweet. I also recommend the blueberry ice tea and the dulce de leche ice cream, which comes served in a tall glass. Moreover, this cafe is very well lit and fairly quiet (at least in the evenings, which is the only time I've been there), which is great for reading. They have outdoor seating too.

What is your favorite?
