Boulevard Bistro, Elk Grove, a very pleasant surprise

At my son's suggestion, we celebrated his birthday last night at the Boulevard Bistro in Elk Grove. I wasn't at all expecting a fine restaurant in Elk Grove, had absolutely no clue that there's a "there" there. The Bistro is in a small charming house. The decor is simple and uncluttered and it's marvelously quiet without seeming at all hushed. The service was great and the food was excellent.

We had several starters, including sweetbreads and polenta with mushrooms. The best was veal marrow on crostini. For entrees, I had pork loin wrapped in bacon, served with mashed sweet potatoes with maple syrup and topped with a tiny bit of red cabbage. My husband had cassoulet topped with braised rabbit, which was delicious. I didn't try my son's filet, but it looked wonderful. His friend had the full entree serving of the polenta. The appetizer portion was skimpy, but the dinner serving was lavish and frankly it's hard to get enough of it. It's worth the trip all by itself.

The wine list is almost all California and has enough choices to satisfy most. We tried three desserts. The chocolate decadence was a little too dense for my taste, and while the persimmon bread pudding was tasty, I was glad I chose the creme brulee, which had one of the thinnest, crispiest toppings I've ever encountered. Dinner for four, including three appetizers, four entrees, and tip but with only two glasses of wine was about $200. A bottle of wine or two would take that higher. Worth the excursion and the price for a special and surprising evening.
