In the same mall, around 310 W. Valley between New and Del Mar in San Gabriel where Meilong Village and Homestyle restaurant are - there's a dessert place with a whole new thing - Konjak, Koncak. It's seems to be a health trend in Taiwan and now it's here.
You can get it with ginger, with aloe (tasted like fruit cocktail), with grass jelly, with a whole variety of fruit. The Konjak itself is some kind of vegetable product that I'm sure someone else here can explain better than I. It was chewy yet gelatinous, very fun and not at all doughy. If you're avoiding the carbs, a very nice switch from the tapioca balls.
In any case, it reminded me of some of those Indonesian desserts. BUT THE BEST PART (for those of us watching our budgets), you can get a sample for free, like at an ice cream store. And they didn't seem too upset that we didn't buy a whole one (we were pretty stuffed after the meal at Homestyle) because the ones you buy looked huge.
If you're in an adventurous mood, give it a try. The konjak place on Valley.
