Nice new find today- this is Eastern NC barbecue done with turkey instead of pork. This is a small operation run out of the owner's home, although he has a separate building that he uses for the prep/storage/etc. It's suprisingly good. It's actually quite similar in appearance and texture to regular pork barbecue, but it definitely tastes like turkey. The sauce used was really excellent and a bit on the spicy side- you could really taste the red pepper. The turkey meat really went well with eastern NC barbecue sauce, and it was refreshingly light and clean tasting compared to pork.
He also does barbecue chicken sometimes, but I haven't been able to try it yet.
Right now it's take out only, and he isn't serving hot food. You can buy either a pint or a quart of barbecue to take away and heat up. However, he told me that he is going to start offering hot plates on Thursdays, starting next week. He's open Thurs-Sat, from 10:30am-8pm IIRC.
Everetts is a very small town of about 100, and may not appear on many maps. The easiest way to get there is to take exit 507 off US64. If you're going to the Outer Banks from the Triangle, this would be right on your way. Once you've exited off the highway, make a right to go towards Everetts. You'll then make a left onto Barnhill St., a few tenths of a mile down. If you're coming from the west, Barnhill St. is the second left; if you're coming from the east, it will be the first. He has a pretty big sign up that will clue you in to the turn. Once you're on Barnhill, you'll cross a set of railroad tracks, then turn into the first driveway on your left after the tracks. There's a sign here, too.
