Bastardized sushi roll

Em | May 24, 2006 03:16 PM

Hi all, the other day on a whim I ordered an Ikura (salmon roe) and cream cheese roll from my neighborhood sushi place for dinner. It wasn't on the menu, although they did list an Ikura roll. Since then, I've been OBSESSSED! The flavor and texture was heaven.

So here's my question: since then, I've tried to order that roll at other sushi places around where I work (Columbus Circle area) and no one will make it. I realize cream cheese in a roll isn't super authentic in the first place, and ikura is usually as sushi, not in a roll. But is this roll such a complete insult to sushi chefs that they should balk at the idea of making it? Or is it just that they won't make rolls off the menu?

Thoughts much appreciated.
