Banjara?! what's the big deal?

so we made it out to banjara last friday night after reading quite a few good reviews here. i must say that i was sorely dissapointed. we both have no idea how this place could be getting such good reviews.

there was only 2 of us so we only had 2 dishes, so i realize that this is not a fair assessment of the entire menu, but the items we had were just plain average.

lamb vindaloo - lamb was a bit tough, and the sauce although spicy, was kinda bland flavorwise

hot banjara style chicken (can't remember exact name) -this dish sounded like a korma on the menu. described as a cooked with a creamy almond sauce. anyway, the dish comes out and it's just tandoori chicken tossed in some tomato-pastey spicey sauce. very disappointing.

we also ordered plain naan and garlic naan. they brought them both out and i swear they were cold, luke warm at best, and already starting to turn hard. naan should be delivered to the table piping hot and super fresh. the garlic on the garlic naan was dried out, and the plain naan was dry and butterless. this really annoyed me. good naan is key to enjoying an nice indian meal.

what stinks most of all is that this place has soured me a bit on indian food. i just haven't tried anything spectacular from anyplace lately. last time we ate at brick lane it seemed to have gone downhill quite a bit.

can someone please recommend where we can find really good authentic indian food in manhattan, queens or brooklyn?
