We'd heard good things about Gruet Steakhouse and, to celebrate birthdays, tried it Saturday night. It truly is a steakhouse, not many other things. The noise was intolerable. High ceilings contribute to that and there isn't much the management can do about it but they can control how many tables they try to cram into a small space. They apparently are taking a cue from lots of casino restaurants thinking that it must be a really hip, cool place if it's so busy you can't have a conversation. We left without ordering and the hostess who seated us told us to have a nice night, totally unconcerned that we'd only been there for five minutes. We walk half a block to Yanni's and had a very nice dinner, good service, reasonable prices.
My question is for those who have been to Gruet: Was my experience typical? If not, where did we go wrong? Look forward to your thoughts.
