Bacar - report

Hello -

I visited San Francisco last weekend, and we went to Bacar on Friday evening 27 September. There were 3 of us, my husband and I met his aunt at the bar and had a reservation for 9 pm. We each had a glass of wine at the bar, all 3 tasted fresh, not like they'd been sitting around. We barely had time to get our glasses when our table was ready, so I didn't get to look at the bar much. Live music started around 9:30.

We split the wok-roasted mussels and a carafe of wine - enough for 3 glasses. The mussels were excellent, and the wine was a lovely match. (my husband picked the wine, and I don't recall what it was). I like that we could order in different sizes based on our needs. A full bottle would have been too much. The mussels were very smoky and came with grilled bread to dip into the sauce. The liquid was filled with barely-cooked garlic. We liked that, others might disagree :)

My husband and I got the salad with goat cheese, and he got a glass of white Sancerre, which again, tasted nice and fresh, and went well with the salad - also nice and fresh.

For our entrees, my husband ordered the duck, his aunt and I got the pork brined in whiskey. It unfortunately was very salty, and we ended up sending it back and ordering something different. We didn't realize that it would be so very salty! They were wonderful about it, and didn't make us feel bad - the fact that both of us felt it was so salty was what made us send it back. If it had been just me I might have sucked it up and just eaten the side dishes. We also got a bottle of red wine, I don't remember what it was, only that I liked it (yes, we took a cab back to our hotel!). I don't remember what our aunt had, I ordered a grilled steak.

To our suprise, they comped us desserts! We told them that we hadn't sent the pork back to get anything, but they insisted.

Overall, I'd say the food was very good, service and management was excellent, and the music was fine. We were seated in the back, near the kitchen, and the band was up front by the bar, so it wasn't overpowering.
