Aroon Thai Market (Santa Rosa)

Malcolm Ruthven | Dec 16, 201004:14 AM

I was in Santa Rosa yesterday near lunch time so stopped into Aroon Thai Market, knowing that the owner Jackie Bentall (ex-owner and chef at Lotus Thai restaurant on the square in Healdsburg) was cooking to order at her Asian market. She cooked an order of Pad Thai for me and it was a very good version of this Thai standard, loaded with bits and pieces of several things (don't ask me what) as well as chicken and tofu. It was a "non-soupy" version (I don't like "soupy" versions of this dish) and spiced "medium" by my request. It's really much more interesting than the website description of "Famous stir-fried rice noodles in a savory sauce". The cooked food is mainly for takeout, but there is one small table outside and you can take a chair or two out there, Did I mention "casual"? Also, there is no menu posted (just ask her for suggestions).

As an Asian (not just Thai) market, there are even more shelves than before stocked with Asian goods, all loaded with so much stuff it made my head spin.

(Full disclosure - Jackie has become a friend since I started eating at Lotus Thai some time ago.)
