Went to Anam Cara for the first time with 3 others on Friday night. Loved the atmosphere...crowded but not a "seen/be seen" scene. I was also impressed by the layout. Somehow, as noisy as it is by the bar, the lower eating level is a pleasant decibal for dining. I was a lso in awe of the waitstaff. Friendly, efficient without being pushy, and amazingly nimble considering the space in which they must maneuver. We started with calamari and various beers. I had a nice Belgian but due to a cold didn't try others'. The calamari was just okay. Not rubbery but not spectacular either. Follow up for me was the spinach salad...excellent, though the tomatoes should be cut smaller and throw a few more onions on, there isn't a shortage. After the salad was the cheese plate. The presentation was lacking, the cheeses weren't ripe, and the bread was to floury. The saving grace was a wonderful mustard (anyone know what kind it is?) and decent cornichons. Husband had one of the nightly specials, a pork dish. The pork was good but the stars of the plate were the sides, a delicious potato/mushroom/bacon dish and roasted asparagus. Our friends hadvegetable risotto which was just okay. All told I would go back for another try but can't see it being a favorite destination.
