Ali Baba, and an early Cheesesteak Alert

Eric Eto | Aug 29, 2003 10:40 AM

I've been wanting to check out Ali Baba for some time, but everytime I try to get a quality bite before a movie at the Kips Bay theater, it's always packed. I can understand why. All the food coming out looked quite good, and the cheap and plentiful aspect keeps the diners coming back. Seeking something different than the standard kebab, I got one of the pide (I think they call it turkish style pizza). It's oblong shaped and fairly bready pizza-like dough filled in the center. I had the cheese and herb one. This was fantastic. Plenty of feta-like cheese with herbs. I can't wait to go back to try the other variety of these.

On another note, I noticed a new place called Carl's Cheesesteaks getting set to open on 3rd Ave just above 34th St, next to the Patsy's pizza up there. Perhaps my expectations are set pretty high, but it would be great to have a really good cheesesteak place in NYC. So far, most places I go for cheesesteaks (Philly's in Times Sq, BB on 3rd St, D&S deli on 56th, and some of the street vendors) are decent, but I have yet to experience any that comes close to those I've had in Philly. We'll see about this place.
