Alhambra area mini-report

Hi all,

I'm a transplanted SF Bay Area Chowhound now living in Alhambra. I've tried several of the restaurants in the area and wanted to report on a few standouts. I've tried to keep up with the LA board (while still reading all about SF) but it's hard to read every one so I'm sorry if they're repeats.

Yu Hong on Valley at New has delicious Taiwanese/Shanghainese breakfasts served everyday. The fried Chinese donuts (crullers) are huge and piping hot. I also got a bag of 10 pork buns to freeze for $8. One is enough for my lunch, making it a great deal.

Next door is Harbor Seafood Restaurant. They were having specials last week of $6 crabs and lobsters. They're are also some other items on the Chinese specials menu that I couldn't read so you might need to ask the staff to translate. The lobster and crab were on the small side but for $12, 2 people can feast on your choice of preparations. I'm not sure when the special ends.

Behind the strip mall with these two is a stand alone building housing a Japanese restaurant called Wonderful (but the kanji characters read ichiban). They have shabu shabu, which was pretty good. I thought it a little pricier than the other places I've been eating at.

I've also tried The Hat for pastrami sandwiches. Yum. But I guess it's also a local chain so people probably already know about this one.

Some other places I tried that didn't make much of an impression either way were: JR Cafe, Noodle Planet, Tung Lai Shun (in the Focus Plaza), and Baccali Cafe. Other than Noodle Planet, which I've seen lots of posts on, any comments on the others? Anything good on the menu I should go back for?

My goal is to eat at least once at every restaurant in Alhambra and Monterey Park in the 4 years that I'll be here. But if anyone has tips on where I should start, send them my way!

Yvonne
