Airmail pie

So ... I want to bake my mom a cherry pie (her favorite) for Mother's Day, but she lives 1,000 miles away. I'm planning to overnight it, but wondering if anyone has tips for this. Should I freeze it and send it on ice to protect it from mushing? Should I just send it fresh and hope for the best? Any packaging tips?
