We've been going on a long weekend trip to Rome to celebrate my birthday for the last 7 years and it's been great. Thanks to lots of research and solid advise from this forum, we have many fond memories of good restaurants: Cesare, Asino d'Oro, Colline Emiliane, Emma, Felice, Pipero al Rex, Gata Mangiona, Enoteca la Torre, Marzapane, Trattoria Monti (5 years ago was good), Roscioli, Armando, etc.
This year we are going to spend a whole week (Dec 31st - Jan 7th) in Rome. We have rented an apartment in one of our favorite neighbourhoods, Testaccio. The idea is to shop at the market, cook a bit at home and then try out one restaurant per day. Here are my questions:
1) We would like to explore a bit further the Testaccio scene. We've never been to Flavio, Checchino (in the forum there is an ongoing discussion Checchino vs Flavio :-), Taverna Volpetti (we always shop at the store but never been in the taverna) nor to Stazione di Posta, The Corner and Osteria Fernanda. Can you help me pick a couple of places on this list? (fyi, we will also go to Felice, as it is a personal "classic" of ours).
2) Any recommendations for interesting "new" restaurants? I've read in the forum that Retrobottega is a gem.
3) For New Year's Eve... We have found a few restaurants in or near Testaccio offering a Cenone: Stazione di Posta, The Corner (are these good or just trendy?), Osteria Fernanda or Pipero al Rex (a bit far away). Any suggestions on these and in NYE in general? Are these Cenone worth it or would it be better to dine at home and go to these places during the week?
Thanks as always for your help! As usual, I will report after the trip :-)
